What are Dark Circles?

Dark circles, also known as periorbital hyperpigmentation, are the darkening of the skin under your lower eyelids. Depending on your natural skin colour, dark circles may appear in shades such as blue, purple, light-to-dark brown, or black. As dark circles are the result of extra melanin deposits around the eyes. The under-eye region appears light to dark brown or black. In fair-complexioned people, dark circles may appear red or purple. This is because of visible underlying veins surrounding their eye area, which gives off a reddish-blue colour to the skin.

Why Do You See Dark Circles Under Your Eyes?

There are various reasons behind the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. These include:

  • Genetic predisposition- An individual’s genetic make-up and skin tone determine the chances of getting dark circles.
  • Volume loss- The sunken appearance or hollowness of the lower eyelids is a primary cause of the appearance of dark circles. It is prominent in individuals who have high cheekbones. With age, tear troughs (or under-eye hollows) appear more prominent. A tear trough is a deep crease between the lower eyelid and cheek resulting from volume loss due to ageing or other factors like sun damage, stress, and genetics. The loss of collagen and fat in the area surrounding the eyes, together with the thinning of the skin, results in the magnified appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
  • Rapid weight loss or weight fluctuations- The under-eye area has paddy fat that gives volume to the skin. Very quick weight loss or loss of fat from beneath the eyes can lead to dark circles.
  • Fluid accumulation or venous congestion- Fatigue or lack of sleep, allergy to eye cosmetics, atopic dermatitis, intake of certain medications, or seasonal and environmental allergies can cause blood to pool beneath the eyes. The congestion in the small veins in the under-eye area can lead to swollen veins, which, over time, may dilate and darken, thereby creating dark circles and puffiness.
  • Visible underlying veins- Dark circles may appear because of increased vascularity in the under-eye skin.
  • Pre-diabetic status- A rise in blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels that carry essential nutrients to the nerves. The damage leads to the appearance of dark circles.
  • Natural skin ageing process- With advancing age, the skin becomes lax, there is reduced firmness and suppleness due to collagen and elastin loss, and the area around the eyes becomes thinner and more transparent. All this causes dark circles to appear.
  • Oxidative stress- Increased oxidative stress produces harmful free radicals, which cause local cell death and cell clearance. This leads to the deposition of haemosiderin- a complex ferritin type, in the skin of the under-eye region. As a result, blue/grey-coloured dark circles appear.
  • More screen time- Staring at the computer or television screen for prolonged periods may strain the eyes and cause the underlying blood vessels to enlarge. This potentially causes dark circles.
  • Hyperpigmentation- An injury or prolonged sun exposure in the under-eye area may cause dark circles to form because of extra melanin deposition beneath the eyes. A deficiency in Vitamin B12 and iron may increase skin pigmentation and also contribute to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
  • Dehydration- When there is insufficient water intake, the skin under the eye area may look dull and make dark circles appear.
  • Poor lifestyle- Taking stress, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and eating unhealthily all can cause dark circles.

How Can You Get Rid of Dark Circles?

As there are multiple causes of under-eye dark circles, there might be a need for multiple modalities to get rid of them. The dark circle treatment in Ludhiana available at The Glo Medispa includes:

  1. Chemical peels- These help reduce melanin production in the skin and minimise melanin dispersion in the under-eye area, thereby treating hyperpigmentation-induced dark circles. Dermatologists often recommend chemical peels like retin-oic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and hydr-oqu-inone to eliminate dark circles.
  2. Resurfacing laser- The heat generated from laser light helps renew the skin, compensate for the peri and vital volume loss, and reduce the darkening of the skin in the under-eye region.
  3. Laser toning- Q-switched Nd: YAG lasers are used to thermolyse the extra melanin in the skin of the under-eye region selectively. The broken-down melanin pigments are removed from the skin of the under-eye area with the help of immune cells. This helps fade out the darkening of the skin beneath the eyes.
  4. GFC therapy- It involves using patient’s blood proteins that, in active form, release natural growth factors. The therapy helps heal the skin of the under-eyes using natural growth factors. It helps increase blood supply to the under-eye area and stimulate new collagen deposition. About three to four GFC procedures spaced out every 2–3 months are recommended for removing under eye darkness.
  5. Plas-ma pen treatment- Plas-ma pen delivers a small electrical charge in the under-eye region without directly contacting the skin. It generates a plas-ma charge by using the voltage in the air between its tip and the natural gases released by the skin.

The pla-sma energy lightly ablates the skin’s surface, stimulating the body’s natural healing process. This therapy helps stimulate the fibroblasts in the dermis to produce fresh collagen and elastin, which give the skin its lost suppleness and, over time, fade out its dark circle appearance.
  6. Cool lifting- In the cool lifting procedure, seru-ms are infused into the skin with the help of cool carbon dioxide to minimise the appearance of dark circles.

The Best Treatment For Dark Circles in Ludhiana: Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are mainly cross-linked hyaluronic acid. They are medium, and G-prime fillers are not visible on the skin surface. Hyaluronic acid naturally occurs in the skin and keeps the skin hydrated by retaining water. As a filler, hyaluronic acid is available in gel form for administration into the skin’s middle layer. When a hyaluronic acid filler is used in the under-eye area, it can help reduce the appearance of dark circles by correcting the under-eye skin volume loss, genetic tear trough, and ageing of the skin of the under-eye area.

Over time, the hyaluronic acid integrates with the skin and causes new collagen deposition. The benefit of collagen synthesis is that the patient would not need to take dermal filler injections frequently to eliminate dark circles.

The under-eye dermal filler treatment procedure lasts for about 30 to 45 minutes. The treatment session starts with cleansing the skin and applying a topical anaesthetic. Once the lower eyelids feel numb to the patient, the dermatologist injects the hyaluronic acid filler into the skin under the lower eyelids using a blunt or sharp needle connected to a syringe containing the filler.

As filler is injected into the lower eyelid, the needle is slowly withdrawn by the dermatologist. The injected area is slightly massaged to spread the filler.

The patients can return home after receiving a dermal filler injection and resume their daily activities. To maintain the positive effects of dermal fillers, the patients may need to repeat the treatment every 10-12 months.

The patients need to take care of these aftercare instructions following their dermal filler treatment:

  • Do not massage or rub the under-eye area for 2 weeks.
  • Avoid applying any cosmetic products in the under-eye area for 3 days.
  • Avoid applying ice, hot bags, and oil around or in the under-eye region for 1 week.
